There are very few things as natural, accessible, and rewarding as running. You don’t need a fancy gym membership or expensive equipment—just a pair of shoes, a determined heart, and space to move. Running is one of the simplest and most powerful ways to maintain physical and mental wellness, nourishing your body’s natural design to stay active. Whether you are sprinting fast or jogging slowly, movement is movement—and every step counts.
In today’s fast-paced world where long sitting hours, work stress, and fatigue steal our energy, running provides the escape our bodies crave. You might not be a professional athlete, but running doesn’t discriminate. It welcomes everyone—young or old, beginners or marathon champions.
My Personal Journey: From Pause to Purpose
My relationship with running began in university as a simple run in the morning, challenged by a hostel neighbour who loved to run in the morning and had overheard one of our girls talk about how we were adding weight, and you know those youth days – no one wants to be the extra size, so I and a few others joined him, and it was hard at first because damn, no one told me about the tiredness and leg cramps after a run, but with persistence it became a norm, and truly I witnessed my spirits lifting, and it was easy for me to play my other sport – tennis. But when I joined the workforce, time slipped away. My shoes gathered dust.
In 2024 I started again — gently.
There was no stadium waiting for me.
Just the neighbourhood road, and a decision to try, and the majority of times it was just a long walk.
Today, I participated in my country's local marathons; so far, I have challenged myself from 4 to 10 km, and it's always fulfilling to finish that set goal—to complete the kilometres you signed up for. That's why I celebrate those who take on marathon challenges. It's not easy but very doable.
The Global Proof: Running is for Everyone
One of the most inspiring reminders came from the recent New York Marathon in 2025. Over 50,000 runners filled the city streets, transforming the event into a celebration of humanity, resilience, and health. From elite champions finishing in under three hours to others crossing the finish line after ten hours or even in darkness, every finisher celebrated their own victory of personal strength and discipline.
There were seniors, first-timers, people with prosthetic limbs, individuals overcoming illnesses, and those running in honour of lost loved ones. The marathon demonstrated that running is for anyone who values health and is committed.
Some individuals travelled from the far ends of the world not only to run but also to experience the beauty of New York, including its crowds, culture, and iconic skyline. Following marathons around the world has become a lifestyle choice for many adventurers. What a beautiful way to see other cities, taste new cultures, and make unforgettable memories while boosting your health!
Discipline Makes the Difference
No one wakes up and suddenly runs a marathon. Every marathon finisher will tell you that they started small. A walk. A jog around the block. Participating in brief competitions within the community is also an option. Weekly consistency can help build a lifelong habit. Running teaches that progress is achieved through practice, not perfection.
If you run for just 30 minutes three times a week, you are already far ahead of a lifestyle characterised by inactivity. It's not about speed. It's not about being seen. It's about being better than yesterday.
Why Running Should Be Your Wellness Partner
Running does more than burn calories. It fuels your life in countless ways:
It strengthens your heart. Running helps your heart function efficiently, which reduces the risk of long-term diseases.
It improves your mood. Every run triggers the release of feel-good hormones, which act as your natural antidepressants.
It sharpens your focus. Clearing your mind through movement enhances productivity and creativity.
Exercise boosts your bone and muscle health. Your bodies become stronger when you are challenged.
It helps you naturally manage your weight. Avoid extreme diets; instead, focus on movement that aligns with your natural human design.
Running serves as your cheerleader, therapist, and fitness coach all in one; it truly becomes your better half in wellness.
A Continental Inspiration: Eliud Kipchoge’s New Mission
And how can we discuss running without honouring its legends? As Eliud Kipchoge transitions from professional racing, he is taking on a humanitarian mission that involves running a marathon on all seven continents. It is more than just a running challenge; it conveys a message to the world:
Movement is universal. Wellness is our right. We only have one body, so let's treat it with grace.
Millions look up to him, not for his speed, but because he inspires us with the belief that discipline, purpose, and passion can change the world.
Start Where You Are
You don't need a major marathon to prove you are a runner. You only need commitment. A short morning jog. We could also commit to a weekend hike. A community run. We could also commit to a small-group marathon.
Every step forward is a win for your future self.
The Greatest Victory
The real success of the New York Marathon 2025 was not the medals or the records. It was seeing thousands take charge of their health—finishing joyfully, exhausted, but triumphant. In that moment, wellness transformed into a celebrated lifestyle rather than remaining a distant dream.
Running provides powerful results, including confidence, energy, resilience, and joy. And all you have to do is keep moving.
A Simple Challenge for You
Lace your shoes. Step outside. Start slow. Start short. But start.
On the track, your wellness is waiting for you.
